North Pasture by Lily Velden

WE STOOD IN the downstairs washroom situated off the kitchen. It felt awkward to shed my mud-spattered jeans and shirt and stand in only my briefs in front of Sam. I was glad for the mud covering my flushed cheeks. At least he wouldn’t be able to tell I was blushing. Now, if only some miraculous impenetrable force field would appear to hide the semi I was sporting.

His voice was thick, choked. Damn, he’d noticed the beginnings of my arousal.

The air between us was as thick as Grampa Jack’s lamb stew, and try as I might, I couldn’t make my lungs work to draw in air. Nor could I raise my gaze to look at him.

He took a step toward me, and everything inside me clamped tight. Another step and the screw tightened another notch.

“Thomas.” He placed a finger under my chin, applying a gentle upward pressure. “Thomas, look at me.”

I obeyed. It never occurred to me not to.

We stared at one another. Slowly, in my peripheral vision, I saw his free hand move toward my face. I swallowed when he removed my glasses, placing them on top of the old washing machine behind me.

“Damn.” His word was but a whisper.

I stared as his face drew slowly closer until his eyes, so dark and serious, became my whole world. I experienced the same feeling I had when, during my travels in Australia, I did the famous Bridge Climb tour over Sydney Harbor. When I’d peered down at the white-capped water so far below I’d gotten that belly-quivering feeling that signals fear, knowing that if the equipment failed, and I fell, it would be forever. There’d be no hope of survival. The intensity of the moment had seen me grip the railing as if my life depended on it, desperate for something to hold on to.

It was that exact same sensation I felt when I first stared into Sam’s dark eyes. He looked down at me, and this time, with no railing to steady me, I fell. I lost track of time and place. I lost track of everything. All I saw were those eyes. They were all I wanted to see.

And then the impossible happened.

Sam Fletcher kissed me.
